Backing Up and Restoring AutoMate Data

AutoMate is capable of backing up managed tasks, triggers, and settings into a compressed file which can later be used to restore an AutoMate installation. AutoMate data can be backed up manually using the Backup... option located in the System menu of the task Task Administrator or a task can be created to backup the data using the 'Backup AutoMate' action.

Manual Backup Procedures

To manually backup AutoMate data:

  1. From the Task Administrator, navigate to the System menu and select Backup.... A dialog box titled Backup AutoMate appears as shown below:

  1. There are two options to select from when backing up AutoMate:

    1. Back up tasks and triggers: When selected, all managed tasks that are located in the Default managed Task Location folder (specified in System -> Options -> System tab) will be included in the backup (this option is enabled by default).

    2. Include constants and system preferences: When selected, all created constants and system preferences (which are located under System -> Options) will be included in the backup (this option is disabled by default)

  2. In the parameter labeled Archive location, enter the path and file name in which to save the archive file or you can save to the default location entered.

If using Windows Vista, the default archive location is:

C:\Users\{Username}\Documents\AutoMateBackup.ama

If using other Windows Windows XP, Windows NT or Server 2003, the default archive location is:

C:\Documents and Settings\{Username}\My Documents\AutoMateBackup.ama

NOTE: If selecting a network share in which to archive data to, make certain to specify the path via UNC (universal Naming Convention) as opposed to a mapped drive. For example: X:\pathname\ should be \\servername\pathname\. This is because mapped drives are connected and/or created when the user is logged on but are not accessible when the user is logged off.

  1. After entering the specified preferences, click the Backup button. AutoMate will then attempt to backup the specified settings into a compressed file with a .AMA extension. The default name for the archive is AutoMateBackup.ama.

Automated Backup Procedures

The Backup feature is also provided as an action within the Task Builder. This can be used to create a simple task that backs-up the current automate installation to a single file (identical to the Backup feature located in the Task Administrator). For more information regarding use of the 'Backup AutoMate' action, refer to Backup AutoMate Action-Setting Properties.

To restore AutoMate settings from a backup:

  1. From the Task Administrator, navigate to the System menu and select Restore. A dialog box titled Restore AutoMate from backup appears as shown below:

  1. There are two options to select from when restoring AutoMate data:

    1. Restore tasks and triggers: When selected, all managed tasks and triggers previously backed up will be restored (this option is enabled by default).

  1. In the Archive location parameter, enter the path and file name to the AutoMate Archive (.AMA) file you wish to restore.

  2. Click Restore to complete the process.
