Setting an Event Log Trigger

Overview

The Event Log trigger is used to trigger a task when a particular type of event is recorded in the Widows Event Log. You can set the task to trigger on entries to an Application log, Security log, or System log. Wildcard characters such as * or ? can be used to search for partial descriptions.

To Set an Event Log Trigger:

  1. Open the Event Log properties dialog box per Setting Triggers.

  2. In the Log type box select the type of log.

  3. In the Event source, Event type, and Event category boxes, select any additional criteria that you want to use to restrict the event.

  4. In the Description box, enter all or part of the log entry that you want to act as a trigger. Use asterisk (*) and question mark (?) as wildcard characters. For example enter *services failed* to trigger on any log entry containing the text "services failed" in the description.

  5. If you want the condition to be met more than once before the task is triggered, click the Counter tab, enable the option Trigger after the condition has been met and select the desired amount.

  6. Click OK. The trigger and its description will be listed in the Triggers properties page.
