Omar Castillon has been with Network Automation for 3 years, 7 months and 19 days, working hard as one of our Quality Assurance and Support Engineers. With the release of AutoMate 10 Beta last month, we thought it would be a good time to check in with our QA pro.

What’s your background in QA?

For the past 11 years I have been working in the Software Development/Quality Assurance fields. I worked on a variety of software titles designed for business, home office, print, design, and education. I also worked on a number of video games for both consoles and personal computers.

What’s the biggest misconception about your job?

A common misconception about my job is that we only test and report issues. There is a great deal of internal work that goes into ensuring our software meets the level of quality we want to deliver to our customers. This includes, but not limited to, testing all areas of the software from different types of installation scenarios, component testing (Task Builder, AMTA, SMC, WFD, Web SMC), to detail action/trigger testing to ensure every option functions as designed. With the cooperation of Priyanka Porwal (Quality Assurance Team member), we ensure all areas of the software function as designed and also conduct verification sessions of fixed issues on every build.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

The most rewarding aspect of my job is knowing that all of the hard work we put into each and every version will result in a positive user experience.

Where would you like to see AutoMate in the future?

AutoMate is a diverse application that holds true to the “No code, no limits” motto with the ever expanding list of new features and support for new technologies while remaining focused on ease of use. In the future, I would like to see AutoMate reach new galactic heights by offering automation solutions while on orbit… Space X and Virgin Galactic, we have an amazing program that will solve your automated needs.

AutoMate 10 Beta was released last month.  What are you most excited about in this latest version?

I am most excited about the re-designed and intuitive user interface. I am also excited about the improvements made to existing actions as well as the additions of new ones.

Do you use AutoMate in your daily activities? If so, how?

Yes I do. I have several tasks mapped to specific keys that allow me to quickly access important information, wake up virtual machines, and check on the status of current projects.

What is something your co-workers don’t know about you?

I've been playing the guitar for over 16 years.

Ever use AutoMate to play a prank on someone? If so, what?

I created a task to run on one of our new QA team member’s computer.  It opened the browser to Facebook when specified hotkeys where pressed. Once the website was opened, a message box would appear with the following: “You exceeded your allocated Facebook time for today…. Sending activity report to IT…Have a nice day”.

One more question: Do you think AutoMate can take over the world?

Yes… yes I do.

Thanks for your time, Omar. Now back to work!
